את האות s  באנגלית מוסיפים ב-3 מקרים חשובים: צורת הרבים, שייכות, וכן בגוף שלישי יחיד בהווה פשוט.  היות שהמקרים אינם קשורים ועלולים לבלבל, דוברי אנגלית כשפה זרה נוטים להשמיט כליל את האות s, דבר הפוגע בָּרֶצֶף עבור המאזין.  תופעת בריחת s, קרי, אי-שימוש באות s ב-3 המבנים שצוינו, מאפיינת ישראלים רבים. ניתן להימנע ממנה אם, לרגע אחד, נתייחס לכל מקרה בו הs  מופיעה: נבין את תפקידה, נראה דוגמאות, ונפנים את חשיבותה.

ראשית - דוגמא בה הרבה sים בסוף מילים.  נסו לזהות את תפקידה של כל אחת. 

The taxes you have been charged are a 'substitute tax'. This applies when securities are credited or debited to a participant's taxable security clearance account. This charge was not made by our company, but debited by the bank - usually because of missing documentation. 

 

להלן שלושת המקרים בהם האות s באנגלית מתווספת:

  

1.הוסיפו את האות s להפוך שם עצם יחיד לרבים Add the letter s when forming plural nouns1.
     
 For example:
  
Plural|Singular
רבים|יחיד
 | 
many ideas |an idea
many companies| a company
employees |an employee
securities |a security
   

 

 

2.הוסיפו את האות s כאשר מציינים שייכות Add the letter s in the possessive form2.
 ביחיד נוסיף קודם גרש'sIn the singular form, first add an apostrophe 
 ברבים נוסיף את האות s ולאחר מכן גרשs'In the plural form add the apostrophe after the letter s!

 ** Please note the difference between the singular and the plural

 

3.פעלים בהווה פשוט, בגוף שלישי יחיד For verbs in the Present Simple in the third-person singular form3.
 דהיינו, נוסיף s בסוף הפועל בגופים he / she / it Add an s at the end of the verb for he / she / it only! 

   לדוגמא:                                                         :For example

Greg delivers the mail in the morning.|He
My mom makes the best food.|She
